Level 1 Dry Needling Course

Learn the basics of musculoskeletal dry needling. Our Level 1 Dry Needling Course is a foundation course for healthcare professionals wanting to learn Dry Needling.

The practical hands-on demonstration runs on Friday 6.30 – 9.30pm and on Saturday 8.30am – 6pm.

Our Level 1 dry needling course is an introductory training program designed for healthcare professionals to learn the basics of dry needling, which is a technique used to treat musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction.

It is a combination of online and practical – with 16.8 CPD hours awarded on completion.

The course covers topics such as:

  • Foundations and principles of dry needling
  • Anatomy relevant to dry needling
  • Safe practice, including contraindications and precautions
  • Hands-on techniques for needling common trigger points in various muscles
  • Assessment and treatment strategies for specific conditions

Precise Points Dry Needling Courses are infused with a strong background in osseous, muscular and neuroanatomy. Through a comprehensive analysis of the anatomy and physiology that underpins Dry Needling and all forms of manual therapy, you will be able to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal pain, structural dysfunction, acute and chronic conditions.

The foundation of all techniques taught in the Precise Points Dry Needling Course is a fundamental understanding of what is being treated, why it is being treated, how the techniques used can benefit the condition.  Therefore, you will leave the course understanding how best to administer your chosen techniques.

Who is the course for

Precise Points Dry Needling Courses have been developed for the practicing manual therapist.

The Precise Points Dry Needling Courses have been designed for physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, remedial massage therapists, medical doctors (GP’s), and other licensed healthcare providers who regularly treat simple and complex musculoskeletal conditions in a clinical setting.

Precise Points Dry Needling courses have been developed to allow practitioners to apply a variety of styles and needling techniques.  Foremost, these techniques are governed by approaching the treatment of each individual client as an individual. Combining Level 1 & Level 2 Dry Needling Courses will allow the participant to confidently diagnose and treat the client with an arsenal of techniques that will not be limited to only one style.

How the course is delivered

The Level 1 Dry Needling Course is a combination of theoretical instruction and practical hands-on training delivered in three components.

  1. Online Learning Modules – study & learn at your own pace with immediate access on course registration.
  2. Online Video Demonstrations – over 70 videos
  3. Practical Hands-on Training – The 1.5 days workshop is delivered on Friday evenings and Saturdays in Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane. (Check available dates on the right)

Pre-course materials and theoretical components are provided online, allowing participants to learn the necessary background information at their own pace before attending practical hands-on sessions. The online component includes theory related to the essentials of Dry Needling, such as the mechanisms of Dry Needling, safety considerations, treatment protocols, understanding skin penetration and more.

Following on from the online theory modules, participants will have access to over 70 videos of material related to Dry Needling techniques specifically related to osseous, soft tissue and practical demonstrations.

The 1.5 Days practical component is entirely hands-on, building on the material covered in the online content and applying it to the practical aspects of Dry Needling. Through a combination of visual, palpatory, and practical exercises, regional areas of the body will be explored using different Dry Needling techniques. This includes instruction on proper needle insertion depth, angle, and manipulation techniques to elicit desired responses.

Under the guidance of an experienced dry needling doctor, you’ll learn various needling techniques, understanding anatomy in relation to dry needling while practicing on fellow participants.

To ensure competence, participants undergo online practical assessments where they are required to demonstrate their understanding of each course module.

Upon course registration, participants receive 12 months access to the online dry needing course support materials to supplement their learning.

  • Dry Needling fundamentals and theory videos that cover all aspects of the theory behind Dry Needling as well as the legislative practical application of Dry Needling in the clinical environment.
  • Over 70 practical video demonstrations that cover all osseous, soft tissue and practical demonstrations that are taught in the practical component of the course.
  • Trigger Point charts
  • Research papers
  • Course notes

Level 1 Course Objectives

Learning outcomes from a Level 1 Dry Needling course typically include:

Level 1 Course Outcomes

Understand the theoretical foundations of dry needling, including its history and mechanisms of action. The ability to explain the theory, principles, and physiological mechanisms behind dry needling.
A comprehensive review of relevant anatomy and physiology to ensure safe and effective needle placement. This includes understanding the locations of muscles, nerves, blood vessels, tissues, and other structures.
Participants will learn the proper techniques for inserting thin needles into specific trigger points or muscle knots. This includes understanding the depth and angle of insertion, as well as the appropriate manipulation of the needle to achieve therapeutic effects.
Understanding how to integrate dry needling into overall patient management, including informed consent, aftercare, and combining with other therapeutic interventions. With an emphasis on safety procedures, contraindications, and managing potential side effects or complications. Participants will be trained in hygiene practices, handling of needles, and emergency procedures.
Participants will develop skills in assessing patients to identify areas of dysfunction, pain, or restricted movement that may benefit from dry needling. This includes conducting thorough evaluations, taking patient histories, and performing physical examinations to formulate an appropriate treatment plan.
Dry needling is often used as a component of pain management strategies. Physiotherapists will learn how to integrate dry needling into comprehensive treatment plans aimed at reducing pain, improving function, and enhancing overall quality of life for patients with various musculoskeletal conditions.
Effective communication with patients is essential in physiotherapy practice. Physiotherapists will develop skills in explaining the dry needling procedure, discussing treatment goals and expectations, and providing education on self-care techniques or exercises to support ongoing recovery.
Enhanced clinical reasoning to determine when dry needling is an appropriate intervention based on individual patient presentation and diagnosis.
An overview of the research supporting the use of dry needling and how to apply it within an evidence-based framework.

Upon completion of this course, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion that can be used towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements and insurance purposes, demonstrating your proficiency in this specialised area of practice. Plus, you’ll have 12 months access to all online components and video demonstrations to continue your education and to further enhance your skills.
